Gilbert Stuart was an American painter of the 18th and 19th centuries, a master of portraiture, and one of the founders of the American school of painting. Over the course of his prolific career, Stuart created around a thousand portraits of American politicians, military leaders, and public figures.
Renowned for his realistic and psychologically insightful portraits, Stuart sought to capture not only the outward likeness of his sitters but also their character, temperament, and inner life. His works are distinguished by refined technique and masterful handling of color and light. He achieved lasting fame with his many portraits of George Washington, including the Lansdowne Portrait and The Athenaeum Portrait — the latter was used for the image on the U.S. one-dollar bill.
Stuart also painted portraits of other prominent Americans such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Madison. His paintings are celebrated worldwide and held in major U.S. institutions including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
