Masaccio was an outstanding Florentine painter of the 15th century and one of the foremost masters of the Early Renaissance. A reformer of painting, he embraced the principles of realism and naturalism and was among the first to apply the rules of linear perspective to art.
In his art, Masaccio employed linear perspective to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface—a revolutionary innovation for his time. He modeled forms through the use of light and shadow, giving his figures weight and volume, and paid close attention to human anatomy, portraying his subjects with natural poses and gestures that imbued his works with vitality and force. One of the most celebrated examples of linear perspective in painting is his fresco The Holy Trinity in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. Other key works include the frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel, such as The Tribute Money and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, as well as the Pisa Polyptych, originally created for the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Pisa.
