Grigory Soroka was a Russian serf-artist and one of the last students of Alexei Venetsianov’s painting school. His work centres on lyrical landscapes, portraits, and scenes of everyday rural life, all marked by a contemplative mood and a poetic sensitivity to the world around him.
Soroka achieved a delicate balance between realistic observation and a romantic feeling for nature. Despite the restrictions of serfdom, he developed his talent under Venetsianov’s guidance, evident in his attentive treatment of the natural environment and his calm, harmonious compositions. His painting Anglers demonstrates his gift for creating perfectly balanced space, where people and landscape coexist as a unified whole. His painting A Study in the House at Nikolai Milyukov's Ostrovki Estate is considered the pinnacle of his interior scenes, capturing the intimate atmosphere of a noble estate through a fine interplay of light and shadow. Grigory Soroka’s works are now housed in the Hermitage, the State Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery.
