Dmitry Levitsky was a Russian portrait painter and one of the foremost masters of the reign of Catherine the Great and the era of Classicism. Active during the second half of the 18th century, he excelled in both formal state portraiture and more intimate, chamber-style portraits.
Levitsky earned renown as the leading portraitist of the Russian court and served as head of the portrait class at the Imperial Academy of Arts. His paintings are distinguished by finely observed psychological insight, harmonious compositions, a rich and nuanced color palette, and remarkably lifelike textures. Among his most celebrated works are his portraits of Empress Catherine the Great and the famous series depicting the pupils of the Smolny Institute. Levitsky’s legacy holds a prominent place in the collections of the State Russian Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery. His originality is also evident in his development of a new genre for Russian art — the “portrait in character,” exemplified by Catherine II as Legislator in the Temple of the Goddess of Justice.
