Gustav Klutsis was a Soviet avant-garde artist and one of the pioneers of Constructivism and colour photomontage. His work, developed primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, spanned a wide range of media, from photomontage and poster design to architectural concepts and graphic design.
Klutsis created a new visual language that fused geometric abstraction, photographic montage, and political agitation. He formulated his own theory of “pictorial montage,” in which dynamic compositions and bold colour contrasts were employed in the service of propaganda. Klutsis became one of the key founders of political poster art in the Soviet Union. Among his most important works are the poster Let’s Fulfil the Plan of Great Works and the Dynamic City series, which exemplify his radical treatment of form and content. Klutsis’s paintings and graphic works are held in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
