Alexander Rodchenko was a Russian and Soviet artist, photographer, graphic designer, and one of the founders of Constructivism. His work of the 1920s and 1930s played a decisive role in shaping the visual language of the avant-garde across painting, photography, poster art, and design.
Between 1920 and 1924, together with fellow instructors at VKHUTEMAS, Rodchenko organized the First Constructivist Working Group, where new approaches to artistic education were developed. During this period, he actively experimented with unconventional camera angles, creating innovative photomontages that became a defining part of his artistic legacy. At the same time, he worked on functional design objects — from clothing to furniture — following the principles of Productivist art. His collaboration with Vladimir Mayakovsky in advertising and graphic design had a profound impact on the visual culture of the 1920s. Among Alexander Rodchenko’s most famous works are the poster Books (Please)! In All Branches of Knowledge and the photograph Pioneer with a Trumpet. His works are held in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Moscow House of Photography, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
