Ivan Kramskoy was a painter and graphic artist, a central figure in Russian art of the second half of the 19th century. A leading voice of the realist movement, he became known as a master of psychological portraiture and one of the founders of the Society of Traveling Art Exhibitions.
Kramskoy played a decisive role in reshaping Russian art. He led the famous Revolt of the Fourteen against the rigid doctrines of the Imperial Academy of Arts, championing the artist’s right to creative freedom. Among his most celebrated works are Christ in the Desert and the enigmatic Portrait of an Unknown Woman. Both paintings, housed in the State Tretyakov Gallery, are outstanding examples of psychological realism. Kramskoy’s ability to penetrate the inner world of his sitters reached its height in his portraits of contemporaries such as Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Shishkin, and others.
