Alexey Savrasov was a Russian landscape painter and a member of the Peredvizhniki (the Itinerants) movement. The central theme of Savrasov’s work was the lyrical image of the Russian landscape, especially spring and the subtle transitions seasons.
Alexey Savrasov developed a distinctive style known as the “lyrical landscape” or “mood landscape,” in which a poetic, heartfelt sense of homeland takes precedence over epic beauty. The pinnacle of this approach — and his most famous painting — is The Rooks Have Returned, where a seemingly ordinary moment of early spring is transformed into a scene of subtle lyricism and emotional depth. Another well-known work, A Country Road, conveys the atmosphere of a rain-soaked rural path. As a teacher at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, Savrasov influenced Isaac Levitan and Konstantin Korovin. Alexey Savrasov’s works are now held in the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum.
