Alexander Ivanov was a distinguished Russian painter of the 19th century. A graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, he dedicated his life to profound philosophical and religious inquiry. Ivanov’s oeuvre centers on historical and biblical subjects, executed in the academic tradition. Now housed in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the painting is regarded as the pinnacle of his career.
