Ivanov’s oeuvre centers on historical and biblical subjects, executed in the academic tradition. His greatest masterpiece is the monumental canvas The Appearance of Christ to the People (1837–1857), a work on which he labored for twenty years. Now housed in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the painting is regarded as the pinnacle of his career.
In addition, Ivanov created numerous studies and sketches for his masterpiece, many of which are now preserved in Russian museums (such as the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg) as well as in private collections.
