The Idea

I used torn pieces of Armenian literature to represent episodes of our cultural memory. Pink flower petals and strong red brushstrokes bring a sense of life, growth and emotion. The color red is used both inspired by Parajanov’s multi-layered style and in the context of the blood shed on the path of preserving and transmitting Armenian culture. I wanted to show that heritage is not something left in the past, it is a living thing that we carry and shape. Through flowers and newer-looking papers, I tried to convey the idea that the cultural heritage of the past is blooming, being passed on anew to new generations. The top ellipsis, three large red dots, represent the continuity of culture and knowledge at all costs, even red blood. At the bottom of the collage, on white paper, is a fragment of the poem «The Snake» by Daniel Varuzhan. This poem also has symbolic significance, as throughout the poem, the figure of a thin, tortured Armenian climbs the mountain on a path of blood, and even when a snake chokes him, he continues to climb. I associate this with the indestructibility of the Armenian spirit, thanks to which culture is constantly transmitted to subsequent generations.
