The Trashmaking Project

PROTECT STATUS: not protected

This art experiment was inspired by Brassaï’s Involuntary Sculptures (he photographed a series of found objects and redifined the meaning of sculpture), and the Cockettes (an avant garde psychedelic theater group of the 1970s), who used a similar approach to their costumes and decorations— «trashmaking”— a dumpster dive that relied on chance, alignment, and inventiveness.

As a result, I created an ongoing experiment: whenever there was a decaying bouquet of flowers in the house (which always served as a starting point), I retrieved interesting objects left in the recycling bin and assembled them with the flowers, photographing the result. I did this on a set time limit, working quickly and without pre-designed plans; moreover, I often worked in the dark.

With the hope of gaining creative freedom over the situation in the editing process, I changed the hue and saturation of the appearing objects, therefore sculpting them, giving them meaning. What became of the process was my own improvisational theater, and though it was not as burlesque as the Cockettes’s performances, it produced a plethora of ephemeral sculptures.
