◆
The sculpture combines two very Russian images in attempt to make a joke about the cultural code. It touches the hearts and awakens the appetite.
The shape of the matryoshka doll was invented by artisans in the 19th century, and came from Japanese culture. Since then, it went a long way from an international symbol of Russia to kitsch and it’s still called a «Russian Doll» abroad.
The salad was created in the 19th century by a french man Lucien Olivier, the chef of the Hermitage restaurant in Moscow. Later, the restaurant was closed, and the recipe was forgotten. And in Soviet times, it was invented back and became a part of every festive table throughout the country. It’s called «Russian salad» abroad.
