The creation of the work began in July 2022, and the opportunity to create the work was the regret of not being able to personally experience the relocation and demolition of my grandmother’s house at the beginning of 2022 due to my studies and the epidemic. Later, when I went back to my hometown and came into contact with another large area of rural demolition, I was deeplyshocked by the huge ruins, so I began to photograph the demolition site.
The content is taken from the demolition of a large village annexed to the author’s home, named《 宀》 (hous), pronounced as «mián». It is a non-commonly used character in modern times, originating from the oracle bone inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty, with the original meaning of house, and often used as a radical in modern times. In this work, it can be interpreted as the destroyed village and the gradually disintegrating production mode of the extended family.
In contemporary Chinese society, traditional villages are gradually being dismantled, and the soil of the traditional rural «extended family» mode of production and survival is gradually disappearing. It has been replaced by the urban mode of «small family» and «singularity» , which is full of isolation in pursuit of economy. The «big family» mode of production and survival is gradually disappearing. With nostalgia for the past, we face the ruins to reflect on the different cultural and cultural aspects of the present urban model. The work is a reflection on the different cultures and problems of the current urban model.
