Illustrations for story «The Towel with a Cockerel Motif»

In 2023-2024 Ekaterina created a series of illustrations for а novella from the collection of short stories «A Young Doctor’s Notebook» written by the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. The stories were created in 1925-26 and were inspired by the author’s experience as a young doctor practicing in a small village hospital in 1916-1918. To get better understanding of the narrative, Ekaterina studied Mikhail Bulgakov’s archive materials from collection of the Russian State Library. The illustrations were created in the technique of collage, combining photographs, author’s drawings and textures. The chosen technique highlights the emotional state of the main character and shows his transformation from an inexperienced student to a savior of a human life. The technique also aims to convey the atmosphere of the historical period (Russian revolution of 1917). Artistic materials: the collages were cut with scissors, glued to paper, tinted with markers, watercolor pencils, gouache, and ink and finalized in a digital format.
