This photographic collection delves into the vibrant and deeply rooted tradition of «Youshen» (游神), or Deity Processions, a captivating folk religious practice particularly prominent in my hometown region of Changle, Fujian province, China. Witnessing these events firsthand growing up, this series is a personal exploration of more than mere parades; they are profound communal rituals. Statues of local deities are carried from temples to tour their domains, a practice believed to bestow blessings, ward off evil spirits, and reinforce strong community bonds specific to Changle’s cultural fabric.
Through my lens, I aim to capture the multifaceted energy unique to Changle’s Youshen: the deafening explosion of firecrackers and gongs, the dazzling colors of intricate, locally-styled costumes and banners, the solemn devotion etched onto the faces of neighbors and elders, and the powerful aura surrounding the revered effigies. These images explore the dynamic intersection of faith, local culture, and community life, offering an intimate glimpse into moments of intense devotion and collective celebration. It’s a documentation of the enduring legacy of ancient beliefs and the living heritage that continues to thrive in my home. Witness the visual splendor and spiritual fervor unique to Changle’s Youshen ceremonies.
