about the competition
Budapest Metropolitan University and HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL invite communication designers and illustrators to reimagine Russian and Hungarian films through alternative posters.
There are two separate categories — Hungarian watchlist and Russian watchlist — and submissions will be judged independently.
Choose films from the curated watchlists and create alternative posters that capture their essence. Watch, interpret, and translate each story into a visual concept that reflects your own perspective.
Both Russia and Hungary have rich, distinctive traditions of film poster design — from the conceptual minimalism and bold typographic experimentation of the Soviet era to the surreal, painterly language of Hungarian poster art. This competition invites you to engage with that heritage and push it forward through your own creative voice.
how to participate?
— Register on this platform, upload a profile photo, and add a short bio.
— Choose your category: METU students should select films from the Russian watchlist, while HSE students should choose from the Hungarian watchlist.
— Create a project and submit it to the competition.
Please note that submitting your work requires a separate step on this page — creating a project on the platform does not automatically enter it into the competition.
guidelines
— Each participant must submit at least five posters: either five posters for one film, or several films from the list.
— Poster specifications: 70×100 cm, JPEG, minimum 150–200 dpi. File naming convention: Name_University_Title (e.g., Anna_Kovacs_METU_Solaris).
— Each submission must include a title and a brief description of your concept.
— Please remember to add tags. Required tag: poster Optional tags: movie poster, METU x HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL

prizes
For METU students:
— 1st place — a trip to Saint Petersburg to open an exhibition dedicated to the competition. — 2nd and 3rd places — Apple AirPods 4.
For HSE students:
— 1st place — a trip to Budapest to open an exhibition dedicated to the competition. — 2nd and 3rd places — 20 000 RUB each.
