Mantegna was born in Isola di Cartura near Venice, but moved at an early age to Padua, where he trained under the painter Francesco Squarcione. He worked primarily in the fields of easel painting and fresco, and is regarded as one of the central figures of the Early Italian Renaissance. Mantegna is regarded as one of the key representatives of the Early Italian Renaissance, having made a significant contribution to the development of perspective and the study of the human form. His art combined elements of classical antiquity with the realism of the Renaissance.
