ITS X HSE — Beyond the Veil: The Mystical World of Russian Myths

Проект принимает участие в конкурсе

Step across the boundaries of reality and venture into a realm where the trees have eyes, the rivers sing tragic melodies, and ancient sorcery breathes within the deep birch forests. Beyond the Veil: The Mystical World of Russian Myths uncovers the rich, dual-natured folklore of the Slavic lands. From the bone-legged witch Baba Yaga in her scarlet hood to the haunting songs of the bird-maiden Sirin, this is a journey into a forgotten world where pagan gods and primeval spirits still rule the shadows of the hearth and the wild.

BABAYAGA «Hush now, or Baba Yaga will catch you.» For centuries, this simple warning has chilled the hearts of children across the Slavic lands. Bent with age but possessing terrifying power, the witch in the red hood loves nothing more than to test the wits and scare the souls of those who wander too far into her domain. A striking visual representation of old-world folklore, where the monsters under the bed actually lived in a hut on chicken legs.

KIKIMORA A creature born from the shadows of the home, Kikimora is the unseen spirit of the household. She is traditionally depicted as a tiny, hunched woman with long, tangled hair, hiding behind the stove or in the dark corners of the cellar. By night, you can hear the eerie scratching of her spinning wheel. If the home is tidy, she blesses the family; but if the house is neglected, she breaks dishes, scares livestock, and tickles children in their sleep.

LESHY The master of the ancient woods reveals himself. Towering over the pines, the Leshy stands as a formidable guardian of the wild, his face hidden behind a grim skull mask. His garments are woven from the very fabric of the forest, heavy with damp moss, overgrown lichens, and wild mushrooms that sprout from the fabric. Crowned with magnificent horns that reach toward the canopy, he is the living embodiment of the wilderness ancient, untamed, and deeply rooted in the earth.

RUSALKA Emerging from the misty waters under the pale moonlight, the Rusalka is a tragic yet lethal siren of the deep. She appears as a mesmerizing maiden with impossibly long, tangled hair, woven with strands of river moss that must never dry out. Her beauty is a haunting illusion; beneath her enchanting gaze, her pale body bears the ghastly wounds of her untimely end, revealing flashes of bone through torn skin. Sitting upon low-hanging willow branches, she uses her deadly charms to seduce unsuspecting men, luring them down to the riverbank with sweet promises, only to drag them into a fatal, underwater embrace.

VODYANOY The grumpy and powerful ruler of the deep waters, millponds, and whirlpools. Vodyanoy is a bloated, slightly chubby entity with pale green skin and a wild, tangled beard that drips with river muck. His face is locked in a perpetual, angry scowl, and his slimy skin is covered in coarse, acne-like bumps and fish scales. He rules over the creatures of the water with an iron fist. Fishermen and sailors always offer him tobacco or oil, because when this short-tempered water grandpa is angered, he unleashes furious storms, breaks dams, and drags mortals down to serve as slaves in his sunken palace.

SIRIN A breathtaking yet dangerous creature of prophecy and sorrow. Sirin is a mythical bird of paradise possessing the radiant head and chest of a beautiful woman. She flies down from the heavenly realms to sing to the mortals on Earth. Her voice is so incomparably sweet, so filled with divine bliss, that anyone who hears it will forget everything else, follow her blindly into the wilderness, and ultimately fade away from sheer ecstasy.
